Reforge Change

Why having a mentor is essential for your career growth

Whether you are aiming to develop a specific skill or wanting to progress your career, having a mentor can be the key to achieving your goals. When I was 21 and took on my first management role, I found myself leading a team of people who were far more experienced than me. I felt completely out of my depth and my manager suggested I find a mentor. That advice changed the course of my career – and today, I want to share why mentorship can make all the difference in yours.

The Value of mentoring – why you need a mentor

1. Gain Perspective
A mentor helps you look at the bigger picture. Their experience gives them a perspective you might not have. Whether you are just starting out or you are well into your career, a mentor can help you refine your goals, navigate challenges and keep you on track. Having someone to guide you through the difficult decisions or moments of uncertainty can make all the difference in your career.

2. Build Accountability
If you are like me, one of the hardest things is staying committed to professional goals, especially when a busy life gets in the way. That’s where mentorship can be a game-changer. Having someone to check in with regularly helps keep you focused. Knowing that you’ve promised to report on your progress can definitely motivate you to take consistent action (ask me how I know!)

3. Boost Confidence
A mentor can be a great source of support. After I came back to work following my maternity leave, my confidence honestly took a hit. It was all quite daunting but my mentor – a senior manager who had gone through the same experience – offered me the support and encouragement I needed. It was just the boost I needed to regain my confidence.

4. Networking Opportunities
Your mentor can introduce you to key people in your industry as well as offering career-changing advice and even help you navigate the inevitable office politics. Their connections can open doors to new opportunities that you might otherwise not be aware of.

5. Learn from their experience
Having a mentor means that you get to learn from their personal experiences – both successes and mistakes. You can avoid common pitfalls and make more informed decisions about your own career.

Mentoring: A Partnership for Growth
Mentoring isn’t just about receiving advice when you need it; it’s a partnership that helps you grow. Whether you need someone to guide you through a tough decision or help you gain confidence, a mentor can be the catalyst that unlocks your potential.
